The Doyle Botts Farm started selling produce over ten years ago at the Menifee County Farmers Market. But its origin goes back decades, through many generations of farmers in the Doyle and Botts families who produced food for their households and saved seeds for next year. Currently, Robert and Aleta and their two kids raise produce and cattle in Menifee County, Kentucky and sell at the Menifee County Farmers Market and the Red River Gorge Farmers Market and on-site at their farm in Denniston.
Robert grew up on a farm on the Nicholas and Harrison County line, where his family raised tobacco, cattle, and a large garden. After graduating from the University of Kentucky, he has worked in agricultural retail for over 25 years. He prefers driving red tractors on the farm, but is willing to drive the family Oliver tractor (born in 1970) and blue tractors as well.
Aleta grew up on a farm in Menifee County, where the family raised tobacco, cattle, and produce. Aleta’s dad Marvin started the Menifee County Farmers Market in 1981 and saved heirloom tomato and bean seeds over the decades that are still being used to produce plants today. She met Robert in an Agricultural Economics class at the University of Kentucky. After ten years in agricultural policy and almost ten years managing an organization providing agricultural technical assistance, she spends her time now mowing pastures and raking hay with the Ford 3930, when she is not working on projects off the farm.
The kids are growing up on a family farm, just like we did. For that, we are forever grateful. Sure, they miss out on activities that you find in urban areas, but they have the space to run free and they learn what living with the seasons is all about. And we all get to enjoy being close to the Red River Gorge.
